Waiving article processing charges for least developed countries: a keystone of a large-scale open access transformation

This article investigates whether it is economically feasible for a large publishing house to waive processing charges the group of 47 so-called least developed countries (LDC). As an example, Springer Nature selected. The analysis based on Web Science, OpenAPC and Jisc Collections’ Compact journal list. result, estimates average yearly publication output 520 publications (or 0.26% worldwide in journals) LDC country group. loss revenues would be US$1.1 million if waiver was applied all these countries. Given that subject categories indicate high societal relevance LDC, given money indispensable development (e.g. life expectancy, health, education), not only desirable but also possible economic terms publisher like APCs without much revenues.
